Pat Cummins to Make Long-Awaited Return in IPL 2025 for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Eyes World Test Championship 2025 Final
Australian cricketer Pat Cummins, the leader of the Australian pace attack, has been out of action since the conclusion of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 due to an ankle injury. He had a left ankle niggle, which was exacerbated during the Sydney Test, where he bowled through pain to help guide his team to a memorable series win.
The injury became severe enough to keep him out of action for an extended period, including the Champions Trophy 2025. He was also forced to miss the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, as he and his wife awaited the birth of their second child, Edi, who arrived during the first Test.
However, Cummins is now targeting his return date in IPL 2025, where he will captain Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). In an exclusive interview, Cummins revealed that his ankle is slowly healing, and he has been working in the gym and undergoing rehab to get fit and return to the park.
"It’s a funny one – it’s not like a hamstring, where you need six weeks (to recover). It’s one of those ones where it really just needs a bit (more) rest to settle down. I’ve been doing loads of rehab in the gym and trying to build back up slowly," Cummins said.
Cummins’ return to competitive cricket will be a significant boost for Australia, as he is expected to play a crucial role in the World Test Championship 2025 final against South Africa at Lord’s later in the year. He will also be crucial in the two-Test series against Sri Lanka.
The 29-year-old pacer is targeting the WTC 2025 final to get into the match groove and check whether he can sustain for longer periods. He believes that his return in IPL 2025 will be a vital step in building up his endurance and getting ready for the World Test Championship.
"It’s four overs in T20s. So, physically, it’s quite a nice build-up for the World Test Championship final and then the Test matches after that. That’s the aim at this stage – start bowling over the next week or so, building up, and should be right for IPL," Cummins said.
Australia will also be hoping that Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, who have been missing from selection due to various injuries, will be fit for the WTC 2025 final. Meanwhile, Cummins’ return in IPL 2025 will provide a timely boost to SRH, who will be looking to make an impact in the tournament.
