- A survey by GAME (Global Alliance for Mass Entrepreneurship) in association with Krea University covering 1,500 micro enterprises found that 40% of enterprises tried to borrow money to cover expenses.
- A survey done by the Endurance International Group (EIG) reported that 1/3rd of the 500 MSME?s survey, 1/3rd were temporarily shutting down their business until business resumes.
- Another survey done by Care Ratings found that nearly 35% of the micro businesses surveyed had said that migrant workers have not returned to work during the unlock period .
While these surveys are insightful, there offer only a snapshot in time. There is no survey which allows us to track how the situation has evolved from month to month. How have the borrowing needs of companies evolved since March? At what capacity are businesses functioning now, compared to June? Do they expect demand for their services to be higher or lower in the coming month? Are the ?greenshoots? of recovery already losing ground or do businesses foresee better demand in the future?
There do exist surveys which track manufacturing and service sector sentiment in India- done by IHS Markit. These surveys provide useful information on the sentiment of major industrial and service sector firms, however they might not fully capture the trends in the MSME sector.
The challenges that come with running an MSME in India are unique and I believe these companies merit their own survey. The talk of the town in Indian policy circles is about making it easier to do business in India. But how do companies really feel about these multitude of policies? How is the situation really evolving on ground?
