The BJP has pulled off a stunning victory in Karnataka, the latest in the long line of wins since 2014. Is the anti-incumbency factor that is going in the BJP?s favour, or is the continued magic of the Modi-Shah duo? Perhaps it is the promise of better days, or that people are simply just tired of the Congress? Whatever the reason, one thing is for sure, there is no stopping the BJP.

Naysayers will attribute the BJP?s victory in Karnataka to many nefarious factors?faulty EVMs, divisive politics, personal attacks. Supporters will say it is the people?s mandate?a comprehensive one at that?and the belief in Prime Minister Narendra Modi?s vision. And while the party’s victory is an impressive showcase of the power of political communication, dedication, persuasion and the voice of the people,

Never before has India seen a single party hold such a strong mandate at the Centre and in the states; with Karnataka, the BJP is now in power in 21 of 29 states. Sure, the Congress dominated national politics for decades, but remember, much of it was during a time when India simply did not have an opposition to speak of. But we do have a multifarious opposition now, although the numbers don?t say much in their favour.

What does such a strong mandate mean for politics and policymaking? The BJP is free from the alliance-induced policy paralysis that chipped away at the previous UPA regime?s ability to govern. Indeed, given its majority in the Lok Sabha and is soon-to-come majority in the Rajya Sabha,

The rudderless opposition will need more than just an anti-BJP plank. They need direction and planning.
