Sayan Chatterjee, Visakhapatnam, December 26, 2024: The bilateral naval exercise SLINEX 24 (Sri Lanka—India Exercise 2024), conducted from December 17 to 20, marked a new milestone in maritime cooperation between India and Sri Lanka. Hosted under the aegis of the Eastern Naval Command, the exercise unfolded in two dynamic phases at Visakhapatnam.
The Harbour Phase, which lasted from December 17 to 18, set the stage for professional and social engagements between personnel from both navies. It was followed by the Sea Phase, which lasted from December 19 to 20. The Sea Phase showcased a robust repertoire of joint activities, including gun firings, advanced communication drills, seamanship practices, navigation manoeuvres, and helicopter operations. Special Forces teams from both nations added a cutting-edge dimension with joint exercises, underscoring operational readiness.
India’s INS Sumitra, a formidable vessel of the Eastern Fleet, represented the Indian Navy. At the same time, the Sri Lanka Navy fielded SLNS Sayura, an Offshore Patrol Vessel, with its Special Forces team onboard. The exercise began with a grand inaugural ceremony on December 17, setting a collaborative tone for the subsequent activities.
The SLINEX series, initiated in 2005, continues to be a cornerstone of India-Sri Lanka naval collaboration. This year’s edition further cemented the bonds of trust and partnership between the two maritime neighbours, fostering a secure, rule-based naval domain.
SLINEX 24 aligns with India’s vision of “Security and Growth for All in the Region” (SAGAR), underscoring the country’s commitment to regional stability and sustainable growth. The exercise enhances interoperability and reinforces shared values of mutual respect and cooperation in safeguarding the Indian Ocean region.
