Chennai Super Kings Appoint Sridharan Sriram as Assistant Bowling Coach for IPL 2025
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has made a significant move in their bid to strengthen their spin bowling attack ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The franchise has appointed Sridharan Sriram as their assistant bowling coach, bringing with him a wealth of experience in coaching multiple national and international teams.
Sriram has a packed coaching portfolio, having worked with Australia’s national team from 2016 to 2022, helping them achieve success during his tenure. He also served as a consultant for Bangladesh’s T20 team in 2022, working with them in the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup.
The left-arm spinner himself, Sriram has a strong cricketing background, having represented India in eight One-Day Internationals (ODIs) between 2000 and 2004, taking nine wickets at an average of 30.44. He has also played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Delhi Capitals (then Daredevils).
CSK’s decision to appoint Sriram is seen as a strategic move to harness his expertise in developing the skills of their spinners. The franchise has brought in a number of quality spinners to their squad, a strategy that has often paid dividends in the past due to the nature of the pitches in Chennai.
The appointment of Sriram is also seen as a vindication of CSK’s vision to strengthen their spin attack, which had failed to pay off last season, as they missed out on a playoff spot. The franchise has aptly settled for a formidable support staff, comprising Stephen Fleming (head coach), Mike Hussey (batting coach), and Eric Simons (bowling consultant).
Sriram’s local knowledge, having played cricket in Tamil Nadu, is also seen as an added advantage for the franchise. He is expected to work closely with the spinners, including MS Dhoni’s favorite leg-spinner, M Ashwin, and others to hone their skills.
