Are Stock Markets Closed Today On Account Of Mahashivaratri 2025? | Economy News

Will the Stock Market be Closed Today due to Mahashivaratri 2025?

In this article, we will explore whether the Indian stock markets will be closed today due to the celebration of Mahashivaratri 2025, one of the most significant Hindu festivals.

Markets Remain Closed on Tuesday Due to Mahashivaratri

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India remained closed on Thursday, February 16, 2025, in observance of Mahashivaratri, a significant Hindu festival. This festival is celebrated annually to honor Lord Shiva and is considered one of the most important festivals in the Hindu calendar.

Sensex and Nifty Post Mixed Trading Performance Before Closing

In the trading session before the market’s closure, the 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex clocked a gain of 147.71 points or 0.20 per cent to settle at 74,602.12. 17 out of 30 constituents of the index concluded the day’s trade with gains, while 13 ended with losses. The broader Nifty of NSE, however, slipped 5.80 points or 0.03 per cent to finish at 22,547.55, with fag-end selling in pharma, metal, and IT shares contributing to the decline.

What’s Behind the Risk-Averse Investor Mentality?

Investors, both domestic and foreign, were seen avoiding risk, citing growing concerns over the global economy. Weak Asian and US markets, accompanied by foreign fund outflows, made investors more risk-averse. This cautionary approach led to a decline in the trading volumes and a volatile market.

Market Performance: Midcaps and Smallcaps Take a Hit

The BSE midcap gauge declined by 0.57 per cent, while smallcap index dipped 0.45 per cent, as investors remained cautious.

Key Gainers and Losers in the Market

Some of the top gainers among Sensex shares included Mahindra & Mahindra, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, and Zomato. On the other hand, laggards were Sun Pharma, Power Grid, Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra, Asian Paints, and Tata Motors.

Will the Trend Continue After the Market Reopens?

The Indian stock market has been experiencing a decline over the past five trading sessions, with the BSE barometer losing 1,542.45 points or 2 per cent. As the market reopens, investors will be keen to see if this trend will continue or reverse.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while the Indian stock market may have closed today due to Mahashivaratri, the trend will be closely monitored once the market reopens. Investors will be watching the performance of various indices, including the Sensex and Nifty, as well as the performance of individual stocks. Will the trend continue, or will there be a resurgence in the market? Only time will tell.
