At least?ten people have died and?about?hundreds more have been hospitalised, as of this time, after a major gas leak at an LG Polymers plant in Vizag, Andhra Pradesh earlier today.

The Prime Minister earlier took stock and extended support to the AP government.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) DG addressed the media on the incident which occurred around 2:30 am. Fire engines, police and emergency medical services arrived in a few minutes to control the situation and around 800 people were taken to hospital.

Currently not operational lowing to the lockdown, the chemical plant was planning to reopen soon and had little staff around at the time of the incident.

Several people were found unconscious or with severe breathing issues around the area. About a 1000 people are said to have been affected by the leak immediately.

Civic bodies have undertaken measures to mitigate the effects of the leak, through air blowers and public service announcements.

There are a few critical cases and the death toll included a young child, but as of now the situation is under control, according to the NDRF.

Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the leak.
